Week One Winners

We’re wrapping up week one of the PSU Bike Challenge. We started off the week with some great weather, free breakfast, ice cream, and some giveaways! Thanks to everybody who stopped by and helped us get amped up for the Challenge.

There’s currently 649 riders registered on www.psubikechallenge.com with 1,823 trips logged for a total of 12,148 miles. Great job everybody! Don’t forget, EVERY RIDE counts this year so add in those weekend rides to score some extra points for your team. And remember: the quickest way to get points is to encourage others to ride, so spread the word!

Welcome to Week One of the Challenge!

It’s finally here!! Week 1 of the 2016 PSU Bike Challenge starts now! We’ve got some pretty sweet events happening today to celebrate the beginning of this friendly competition.

Biker Breakfast

We’ll be hosting FREE breakfast from 8-10 a.m. today!

Kick-Off Party

We’ll have FREE Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, KIND Snack bars, and an assortment of prizes and giveaways. We’re also going to be raffling off a brand-new Raleigh Bicycle, so stop by for your chance to win!

How do I log my trips?

You can log a ride on the PSU Bike Challenge website from your profile page using the ‘Add a Ride’ tab. You can also download the Love to Ride App for Android and iPhone.

What if I don’t want to log every ride?

Then Moves is the app for you! Moves runs in the background of your phone and allows you to sync with your profile to update your stats automatically as you ride!

We’ve also built in a sync with Strava, MapMyRide, and Endomondo, for those already using another app.

How do I win prizes?

Every trip logged on the website or app is an automatic entry into the weekly prize drawing. Winners will be announced via email, on the Challenge website, and on our blog.

Just be sure to log all of your rides by Friday each week in order to be eligible for prizes and a chance to win a brand new Raleigh bike!

At the end of the challenge, we’ll also be hosting an Awards Party where we’ll hand out prizes and trophies for winners in various individual and team categories.

Friday Flat Fix Clinics

Bring your bike and learn the fundamentals of changing a flat tire. This is a great refresher class or for first-time riders.

  • Every Friday from 12-12:30 pm


Women’s Maintenance 101

This class is open to anyone who identifies as female. This informative workshop, which is led by our female staff, will cover all of the basics of repair maintenance for properly maintaining your bicycle. Feel free to bring your bike and ask questions. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Commuting 101

Get comfortable riding to and from campus. In this class we cover everything you need to know to keep you safe, as well as some handy emergency maintenance techniques.

Basic Bike Maintenance

For new or seasoned riders, this class covers the essential elements of bicycle maintenance. We’ll cover flat repair, cable adjustment, and identifying mechanical issues before they get out of hand. Feel free to bring your bicycle to discuss any specific questions you may have.

Bicycle Legal Clinic

Have questions about the traffic laws related to biking, insurance, or what to do in a crash? Come get your questions answered at the Bicycle Legal Clinic. Charley Gee, local attorney, will walk you through the rights and responsibilities of cyclists on Oregon’s roadways and sidewalks. This class is free and open to the public.

Each week in May we’ll be setting up around campus and serving free breakfast for riders between 8-10 a.m.

Presenting the New and Improved 2016 PSU Bike Challenge

This friendly, month-long challenge is designed to encourage the Portland State University community to bike in Portland during the month of May.

How it Works:

Students and employees participate on teams, based on their college/department, to see who can get the most participants to ride and log their trips between May 1-31. Points are awarded in a number of categories. But the fastest way to earn more points is to encourage others to join!

We also have some exciting new changes coming this year:

New Challenge: EVERY ride counts this year, not just commutes to and from campus. Participants can log trips to the store, bike rides to class, pedaling to the bar….every ride counts!

New Website: We’ve got a shiny new website for our new and improved challenge. The website will have some awesome features for tracking your progress, viewing your team’s stats, and syncing with other apps.

New App: We’ll be rolling out a new mobile app (for iPhone and Android) to make it easier to log your rides from any smartphone or tablet.

New Teams: Rather than forming teams, this year participants will be competing under their college/department. This will help students and staff to encourage others to participate and add up points for their teams.

New Incentives: There will be a new points system and increased incentives for new riders and those who encourage new riders to join. We’ll also have a new line-up of prizes from a great list of sponsors, which we’ll be giving away throughout the month of May.

New Prizes: Every trip logged on the PSU Bike Challenge website will be an automatic entry into a raffle for a variety of prizes from our sponsors. We’ll also be awarding prizes for riders who make the most progress throughout the month.

How to Compete:

  • Visit www.psubikechallenge.com to register with your pdx.edu email address
  • Ride your bike anywhere (for at least 10 minutes) in the month of May
  • Record your ride on the website or app (automatic syncing available with other GPS-enabled apps)
  • Score points to win prizes for yourself and your team

An in-depth look at the various systems of the bicycle. This series of courses is designed to get you comfortable and confident with more advanced types of repairs and the theory behind how these systems work.
